It was started, and funded in full, by Hollywood film studios in an attempt to reinvigorate what was perceived as a lack of good conflicts to make movies about, citing the earlier World War 2 as a major inspiration. WW3 was fought on the five major battlegrounds: land, sea, air, space, and the astral plane.
