Alphabet City

Alphabet City is a densely populated enclave located within the City of Hollywood, most notable for its chaotic, labyrinthine construction and numerous colorful doors. Almost all its known residents are puppets, with an estimated population somewhere in the range of one million. Accurate census data is unavailable due to puppets being very bad at answering questions, and also not being classified as legal residents under Hollywood law.

History

The site of Alphabet City started off as a set of warehouses for prop storage, which became abandoned when the company that owned them went bankrupt. The site lay unused for some time, and though the exact date puppets began immigrating to the site is unknown, a minor newspaper article from September 22, 1961 ("Hollywood Faces Puppet Infestation") described the unwelcome changes to the area.

By the summer of 1969 the puppet presence was not only noticeable, but intolerable. Nearby residents and businesses implored the city authorities to do something about the situation, as the puppets had begun attempts to incorporate neighboring structures as parts of Alphabet City. Everything was slated for immediate demolition, and despite puppet interference the structure was leveled over the course of several days, removed entirely by August 27, 1969.

It was all back again seemingly overnight, even bigger and more obnoxious than before. There were a further eight demolitions, each one resulting in the massive structure being eventually built back. The last demolition happened in 1976, and failed before it began due to interference from a puppet of gargantuan size. Though constrained by the shape of Alphabet City and seemingly unable to fully emerge without shattering the construction itself, the puppet (nicknamed "Googly Joe" by locals) still managed to prevent the demolition by destroying heavy machinery and causing the deaths of several city employees.

Hollywood has since maintained a policy of containment rather than destruction. Sanitation workers and animal control specialists are sent into Alphabet City on semi-regular occasions to ensure that no construction extends beyond designated containment lines, and to subdue the rowdier puppets, often with flamethrowers.
